Snapshow
Bloody Bagus 12 Aug 09
Epic waves, scorching sun, warm water, friendly locals, crazy roads, corrupt police, ice cold bintang and thieving monkeys. This is Bali.
Blue Snapper has been away on holidays, actually, still is away on holidays. My girlfriend and I escaped the cold of Sydney's winter and took off to the warm weather of Bali, with a quick stop in at Perth on the way.
While there our mates took us over to Rottnest Island which was absolutely amazing. I haven't seen water like they have at 'Rotto' anywhere in the world, the colours are unbelievable. Apart from nearly going overboard on the boat back over to the mainland, the day out on the island was something everyone needs to do. They have waves too, heaps of them. Sharks too, heaps of them.
Our first week here in Bali was not all time on the wave front, giving us time to explore some of the non-surfing activities on offer. We have held a baby orangutang, played with a baby elephant (which I don't think you can do at Taronga), ate so much food for ridiculously low prices, drank many a can of Bintang and lazed by the pool.
Don't get me wrong, the waves have not been terrible at all. I was stoked to put the camera down and get amongst it. I had some really fun surfs at Canggu, the Kuta reefs and the hectic closeout out the front of our hotel in Legian. The crowd levels are high and in a few places the vibe is tense, but you can find little gaps in the crowds and score really fun waves here.
If predictions are correct Bali should get thumped with a solid swell this Friday, so I should have some crackers for you all to look at next week.
I got about 20 messages today from mates in Sydney raving about the waves they have been scoring this week. Then a few emails of shots came through this afternoon to back up the claims. I'm stoked for you all back home, it was about time we got something decent again. Looks like it should be fun for the next day or two at home too, so enjoy it.
Hope you all get into the surf this week.
See you back on the Northern Beaches next week.
Cheers,
AL
